This blog will have my opinions on controversial topics that are somewhat new and old views. I'm very new to this blogging stuff so be patient with me if I mess up. Also, this is a civil and mature blog so if you would like to leave your opinion in a comment, do NOT use name calling, bashing, or other childish actions. I would love to hear from other people on their opinions so we can open our minds and learn from each other.

Hospital in trouble for racism
Let me ask you how many people in the USA (or world) do you think ask for white only, or black only staff in a hospital? How many people do you think in the USA (or world) ask for female only staff or male only staff in a hospital? Quite a few actually.
I can understand how the African-American staff felt when they where told that the father did not want them to take care of his newborn, only because of the actions he took. Showing off a tattoo that he obviously was trying to use to scare or intimidate the staff instead of verbally intimidating them. According to the news article, the father simply said this: "The father told the charge nurse “he did not want any African Americans taking care of his baby,” the complaint said." That would in my book have been fine because he didn't call them any derogatory name and he didn't straight out say blacks. He used the proper term but this is where he made the mistake that probably caused this incident to be popular news, "While making that statement, he pulled up his sleeve and showed a tattoo “believed to be a swastika of some kind.”"
Now what if the father had asked for females only to take care of his newborn? Most likely nobody would take notice. Why is this? Is sexism more tolerated in hospitals and society then racism? No that isn't the issue at all. The issue isn't race or sex, its the actions the patients take to get what they want. The news article does not call this father a Noe-Natzi, 'Skinhead', white pride member or any other such things but society has. This is another thing that gets under people's skin is his tattoo and actions. However, if a feminist (male-hater as most are called by society) where to ask for female only staff to care for her newborn and had a shirt or tattoo that said MEN ARE EVIL or some other male discriminating sign do you think it would have gotten this much attention?
Personally, I don't think it would have.
In this case, I feel the hospital did it's job in providing a comfortable atmosphere for the patient but I also think they could have handled it better for the nurses AND that the father could have at least tried to be more civil, as in NOT showing his tattoo for intimidating purposes. I myself have had some bad experiences with male doctors and I always ask for a female because of previous visits.
For those of you who actually read this, what are your thoughts on this incident?
